About Gravure

Rotogravure is a long established process with the attribute of producing the highest quality printing available today. Until recently however, it has suffered from many misconceptions about its high prepress cost and its capability to work in a short run situation. Simply stated, gravure is a process that is not well understood by many and therefore, has been relegated in their minds as a process that can only be used in high volume long runs.

Quietly however, gravure has made enormous strides in addressing at earlier shortcomings through the use of lead edge technology and material innovations, which have largely gone unnoticed and unappreciated in today's world of package and label printing.

A Few Facts:

  • Most of the large pressure sensitive label producers employ gravure as their premium process.
  • Gravure was the first process to become all digital.
  • Almost every gravure printer in Northeastern United States uses waterborne inks.
  • While flexo and rotary letter press pre-press costs have risen dramatically over the last decade, gravure pre-press has seen only a modest increase.
  • In many situations, gravure printing does compete favorably with flexo production costs.
